Thrombin, the last enzyme in the coagulation cascade, is selectively and reversibly inhibited by this. The approved use case involves patients undergoing elective major orthopedic surgery (MOS) and primary prevention of venous thromboembolism (VTE). In individuals with non-valvular atrial fibrillation, it is a direct thrombin inhibitor recommended to lower the risk of stroke and systemic embolism.
